Alan Wallwork The Last British Pots Iain Rutherford Turning the Tide - Recent Paintings 31st October to 21st November 2004 |

When Katharine
Pleydell-Bouverie was interviewed for Ceramic Review in 1974 she was
asked about developments in pottery and stated "I'm a simple potter - I
like a pot to be a pot, a vessel with a hole in it, made for some
purpose." She then went on to list a few potters whose work she
especially admired and, alongside David Leach, Michael Cardew and Richard Batterham, she included Alan Wallwork. Then only
recently, while browsing the Independent Saturday Magazine, I noticed
in one of the pictures that one of London's leading dealers in modern
conceptual art has some of Alan's work in his home. I think this illustrates
the wide appeal that Alan's work has gained over the 45 years that he has
been working and is an apt introduction to this exhibition of Alan Wallwork's
last pots before his imminent move to S.W. France. This show also
marks the second exhibition of Iain Rutherford's paintings at the Harlequin
Gallery and from the title "Turning the Tide" you will have hopefully
deduced that they all have something to do with the sea and coastline.
Besides the Harlequin Gallery, Iain's paintings have been shown at the
Berkeley Square Gallery in London W1 and the Belgrave Gallery in St. Ives. For more
