Anne Mette Hjortshoj currently works
from her studio on the island of Bornholm in her native Denmark, where she
graduated from the Glass and Ceramic School five years ago. I first came
across her and her work at the Oxford Ceramics Fair in 2001 at the end of a
year that she spent working with Phil Rogers in Wales. I instantly took to
her work and speaking with Phil a little later found out that he was also
extremely impressed, so much so that he included an example of Anne Mette's
work in his book "Salt Glazing" published in
2002. Her work is also to be found in other publications, including
"Pots in the Kitchen" by Josie Walter and is represented in the
Museum of Bornholm collection. When commenting on her work Anne Mette
states that the fundamental magic occurs at the moment when wood, fire, salt
and ashes combine with the clay to change shape and surface. The image of
perfection disappears - the piece obtains its identity. My interest is in the
careful study of the little details that you get to know, if you spend enough
time with one pot among all the others." Besides working with Phil Rogers, Anne
Mette has work with the potter John Thies in the USA and has taken part in 3
exhibitions there. She has also exhibited in Denmark, Sweden, Estonia and
last year at the Rosenthal Studio-haus in Germany. |
