Ayane Muroya |
|
|
It is maybe unremarkable for a young artist
to have her first solo exhibition in the UK just eighteen months after
graduating from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London.
However, Ayane Muroya is in fact an old hand as far as exhibiting is
concerned. She has taken part in mixed exhibitions and had solo exhibitions
in Japan, where she was born. She has also exhibited in Germany and took part
in and won the first prize at an International Modern Calligraphy exhibition
in Seattle, USA, in 1994 when barely a teenager. As Ayane states, "I have been working
as a calligrapher in Japan since I was a child and having both parents
working as contemporary calligraphers influenced me towards art. Japanese
ink, Sumi, has always been part of my life and has a special meaning for me.
Ever since I left Japan, willing to learn about and work with new materials,
I tried not to work with Sumi. In fact it was only recently that I felt the
need to go back to my origins. It is as though I had always known the beauty
of Sumi and I noticed it
again." Besides her already impressive exhibition
list, including her most recent solo exhibition last August at the Dohjidal
Gallery of Art in Kyoto, Ayane was also the subject of a television
documentary produced by ABC Asahi TV of Japan that featured her solo exhibitions
and time at Saint Martins. The work for
her first British solo show at the Harlequin was produced at the end of 2004
during a visit to Japan where she was taking part in an exhibition alongside
her parents. Below are examples of Ayanes
work currently available at the gallery. |
