Cornwall
and more especially the towns of Newlyn and St. Ives have attracted artists
since the 1870s but it was not until 1920, when Bernard Leach returned to
this country after spending eleven years in Japan, that pottery began to gain
a foothold in the area. Despite Cornwall’s isolation and lack of some raw
materials, Leach and many of the potters who have worked there since have
managed to survive and in many cases gone on to gain international
reputations. In this
exhibition of both new and older work it is only natural that many of the
artists included have at one time or another been connected with the Leach
Pottery. Indeed there will be examples on show of Leach Pottery Standard
ware, together with individual items made by potters during their time at the
pottery. These will include work
by Trevor Corser; Nic Harrison; Scott Marshall; two large vases by the Tamba
potter, Shigeyoshi Ichino, as well as twelve pots by Janet Leach, a personal
favourite of mine. Below are listed the names of some of the potters and
potteries included in the exhibition and by clicking on the name you will be
able to see examples of the work included. Finally, there will be a few items from some of the more commercial
studio potteries of the area as well as works of art either by artists
associated with Cornwall or paintings of Cornwall itself.
