Elspeth Owen, who was born in 1938, is a self taught potter. She had studied History at Oxford University and then Social Administration at the London School of Economics but began making pots at evening classes in Cambridge in the mid 1970s. Her interest developed whilst living in New Guinea with her family and upon her return she showed these to Henry Rothschild, who included some pieces in an exhibition he was curating at Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge.

Using a wide range of different clays, she constructs her pots through a combination of pinching and thinning and fires them at a low temperature. This means that they remain porous, giving them a sense of being ephemeral yet timeless. Elspeth suggests that her pots “emerge more from memories of holding and being held than from any study of art or nature.”

Her work is to be found in many of the major museum collections in the UK and Europe.
