John Mackenzie

John Mackenzie is a young potter, who graduated with a degree from Harrow (University of Westminster) in 2001.

He says that having lived in the Penwith region of Cornwall for most of his life has meant that he is inevitably drawn to the sea. The explosive energy which the sea and cliffs create never ceases to amaze John and it is probably a similar explosive energy of flames on clay that has lead him to wood firing. Fortunately other students at Harrow had similar interests and it was while he was there that a number of them built their first anagama kiln. John says that he finds wood firing enlightening, as he is so deeply involved in the firing process.

Last year John moved to Somerset where he built and fires a small anagama type kiln along with John Butler, a fellow graduate of Harrow. The kiln completed in December 2003 takes around 36 hours to fire to 1350 degrees Celsius and has an underground flue system to improve the efficiency of the firing.

Much of John's work exhibited in the "Fire & Energy" exhibition at the Harlequin Gallery during May and June 2004 was done largely using oak off cuts during the firing process. John has been experimenting with mixing different clay bodies, using porcelains through to heavily grogged high iron bodies in order to obtain different colours and textures.
