John Maltby originally
trained as a sculptor before taking up a pottery career after becoming
“infatuated with Bernard Leach and the Craft Workshop tradition”. He began by
working for David Leach at Bovey Tracey in the early 1960s and then set up
his own workshop near Crediton in 1964. There he made a range of thrown
domestic wares, which developed over the years through mainly hand built
vessels with painted abstracted images to the current sculpture that he
turned to after undergoing major heart surgery. While he admires the
traditional skills of potters, such has his good friend, Richard Batterham;
he knows that it does not suit his temperament. He cites artists such as Picasso,
who he met, Paul Klee and Alfred Wallis as influences but it is clear that
ancient English mythology, fables and poetry have had as much impact on his
work as any visual imagery. |
