Wood-fired Stoneware 18th April to 9th May 2004 |

The
Harlequin Gallery welcomes Chris Lewis back for a solo exhibition of his work
that has been chosen by Ceramic Review, the International Magazine of
Ceramic Art and Craft, as the "Pick of the Shows" taking place this
month. Chris makes
domestic and garden pots as well as individual and sculptural pieces in
stoneware that are all wood fired. Some are decorated either by hand painting
or sgraffito in conjunction with various glazes that give a depth of colour
or tone. The decoration techniques and ideas used are based on traditional
methods from this country and around the world, with the influence of Chris's
love of tribal art much in evidence. Of course, firing in a large single
chamber anagama type kiln to between 1300 and 1350 degrees Celsius also
produces variations in colour. Chris usually fires two or three times a year,
with each firing between three and four days in duration. Much of Chris's
work is thrown on a wheel but throwing together with hand building techniques
are used for some of his large garden pots and
sculptural pieces. Below are examples of pots included in the
exhibition. |
