Nina
Peskett originally trained in architecture and
whilst working as an architect developed a long-term interest in ceramics. This
she developed by attending a number of courses with tutors that included
Katerina Evangelidou and Siddig El Nigoumi. Eventually she decided to take a
degree in the subject and graduated from the Surrey Institute of Art and
Design in Farnham in 1997. The following year she was selected to participate
in and exhibit at the International Workshop of Ceramic Art in Tokoname,
Japan, where her interest in wood firing began. Following a short course with
Nic Collins, she built a small experimental kiln, which has been superseded
by the larger anagama style wood fired kiln that she currently uses. Nina's work is mostly thrown
but she does some slab building and decoration is limited to slips freely
applied and glazes generally to the interior. As Nina says, "I like to work
in a direct, free and immediate way, trying to retain the energy of the
making and the qualities of the wet clay. I am happiest with strong plain
forms, which offer an uncomplicated surface to receive the action of the ash
and flame of the firing process. I enjoy the excitement and surprises that
the firing has to offer." |
