Paintings: From Mumford's Mill Greenwich to St. Ives

Together a showcase of Leach Pottery, including individual work by Bernard Leach, Janet Leach and others.

Sunday 14th July to Sunday 4th August 2002

Boat at St. Ives Harbour Cornwall 1 - watercolour 2000

This exhibition of paintings by Iain Rutherford contrasts the work Iain painted around 1990 when he had a studio a short distance from where the Harlequin Gallery is today and more recent work. The bulk of this later work was painted around St. Ives in Cornwall and is looser with a lighter palette. To a certain extent this echoes the change in environment from urban to semi-rural but also seems to reflect the more immediate "plein air" approach Iain now uses.

The earlier "Mill Series" is based on Mumford's Mill by the tidal creek that separates Greenwich from Deptford. However, anyone expecting an exact interpretation will be disappointed. Iain's work is his view of this sharp gritty edge of London's inner city core. The shapes are recognisable but his desolate environments are devoid of people, as if an empty stage awaiting the actors. It reminds me of the work of De Chirico and Rothko yet different from either.

Alongside the paintings it seemed appropriate to include a showcase of Leach Pottery because of the St. Ives connection. This will include individual work produced by Bernard Leach, Janet Leach, Trevor Corser, Nic Harrison and John Reeve, together with a selection of Standard ware and other miscellaneous items
