Seigan Yamane |
|
|
Seigan Yamane, who was born in 1952, is a well-known
potter of Hagi-yaki, which is regarded as the highest prized of teaware next
to Raku in Japan. Amongst his peers, in and around Hagi City in Yamaguchi Prefecture,
Yamane is known and respected for his blue glaze, which is known as Seigan
blue. Besides his quest for the perfect abysmal blue, Yamane makes work in
other styles, including the Demon or Oni-Hagi glaze that is perhaps the
signature style of Hagi-yaki. He is self taught and works out of the Kousaian
Kiln, which he opened in 1987. It
is said that Yamane gets up at 5 o’clock every morning in order to climb a
nearby mountain to watch the sunrise and then begins potting by 8 o’clock. He
continues with this throughout the day until stopping in mid-evening to eat.
He says that it is the whole creative process rather than just the end
product that he finds fulfilling. Besides
being a potter Yamane is also a master of karate. Ten chawan and yunomis by Yamane were
included in the Harlequin Gallery “Teabowl” exhibition during March 2005 and
others were shown in a similar exhibition a year later. Below are examples of his work currently available at the
