Shuei Tomonaga

Shuei Tomonaga is a potter of Hagi-yaki, which is regarded as the highest prized of teaware next to Raku in Japan. I am told by my contact that Tomonaga is a soft-spoken rather shy man, who works out of Hagi's Seishu kiln. His work reflects his character and may at first seem rather dull when compared to other work. However, I find that I have been drawn in by the simplicity of his bowls and the longer I have had them the more I have come to appreciate their understated qualities.

Work by Tomonaga was included in the Harlequin Gallery “Teabowl” exhibition during March 2005. As you will see most of the items below are sold but it is planned to add images of a few more items shortly.
