Gordon Crosby

William Newland, who was in charge of the ceramic department, first introduced Gordon Crosby to pottery at the Institute of Education in London in the 1950's. Gordon followed this up by continuing his pottery education at the Central School of Art, which he attended two evenings a week for three years. There he was taught by Ruth Duckworth and Dan Arbeid, who have been a great influence on Gordon's work.
Throughout this period and for much of his working life Gordon taught art at
Wimbledon College, so pottery has had to take a back seat. However, since taking early retirement Gordon has concentrated on his pottery resulting in him exhibiting at the Galerie Besson and now at the Harlequin Gallery.
Besides his early teachers, Gordon admits to being influenced by the American potters Peter Voulkos and Paul Soldner. Recently when I mentioned to one of my American clients that the piece of Gordon's work she was looking at was “a bit like Voulkos" she replied "Yes, but better." Praise indeed.

Laura Gethen Smith

Laura, who lives in Kent, trained at Croydon College of Art, the City & Guilds of London Art School and at St. Martin's School of Art. She has taken part in a number of group and solo exhibitions in London, the North East of England and Scotland and her work is in several private and public collections, including the Nuffield Institute.
Laura, who produces the most exciting work that I have come across in ages, has come up with a selection of new paintings especially for this exhibition.

Since then Joseph has established a studio with an associate, which included the building of an outdoor gas-fired salt kiln in the West Country. He also teaches pottery part-time at Richmond Adult & Community College, which includes running a special salt-glazing course.
