Charles Vyse was born into a
Staffordshire pottery family and began working for Doulton, as an apprentice
modeller when he was just fourteen years old. His formal studies began during
this period when he attended Hanley School of Art and at the age of 22 or 23
he moved to After his studies
were complete he started his own sculptor studio, which widened to include
moulded figures that were decorated by his wife, Nell. His studio on the
Chelsea Embankment was close to the house of George Eumorfopoulos, who had a
fine collection of early Chinese ceramics, and after they became friends Vyse
was hooked on trying to replicate these wares. In this he was helped
enormously by his wife, who had an extensive knowledge of glaze chemistry and
