Charles Vyse was born into a Staffordshire pottery family and began working for Doulton, as an apprentice modeller when he was just fourteen years old. His formal studies began during this period when he attended Hanley School of Art and at the age of 22 or 23 he moved to London after gaining a scholarship to study sculpture at the Royal College of Art. Periods of further study followed in Italy and finally at Camberwell School of Art. At Camberwell the Principle was William Dalton, who was a studio potter, but it wasn’t until several years later that Vyse began throwing pots and studying the intricacies of Chinese glazes.

After his studies were complete he started his own sculptor studio, which widened to include moulded figures that were decorated by his wife, Nell. His studio on the Chelsea Embankment was close to the house of George Eumorfopoulos, who had a fine collection of early Chinese ceramics, and after they became friends Vyse was hooked on trying to replicate these wares. In this he was helped enormously by his wife, who had an extensive knowledge of glaze chemistry and soon the work was being exhibited regularly at Walker’s Gallery in Bond Street. This experimentation continued alongside the production of their ceramic figures up until 1940 when the studio was damage during an air raid and Charles decided to move to Surrey. He and his wife split up at around the same time and Charles took up a position at Farnham School of Art. These events brought an end to the pottery production but he did take up the production of figures again before finally retiring in 1963.
