  William Marshall

William or Bill Marshall was born in St. Ives in 1923 and was the first apprentice taken on at the Leach Pottery when David Leach employed him straight from school in 1938. Except for a time when he was conscripted into the army during the 1940s, Bill remained at the pottery until his retirement in 1977.

Since then Bill has produced work from his own workshop near to his home in Lelant, although his rate of production has reduced considerably over the years. As he stated to me in a conversation that we had a few years ago, he wished to spend time during his retirement doing other things that interested him besides potting. One such interest is his own personal crusade to try and sustain the landscape around St. Ives that he knew as a boy.

Undoubtedly Bill is a fine potter and thrower and to many people, including myself, he is one of the finest craftsmen of his generation.

The pots on this page were included in the Pottery of Cornwall exhibition at the gallery during March 2006.
