Once
again the run-up to Christmas sees a mixture of items both new and old for sale
at the Harlequin Gallery, with perhaps more of an emphasis on older ceramic
items this year. Included
in the latter will be five recently acquired pots by Katharine
Pleydell-Bouverie (1895-1985) as well as even earlier work by Charles Vyse
and Alfred Hopkins. Two items by Michael Cardew (1901-1983) will also be
available alongside other earthenware from the Winchcombe Pottery and later
work associated with Cardew's Wenford Bridge Pottery, including some early
pots by Rupert Spira. However be warned Rupert's work back in the 1980's was
unlike what he produces today. Following last year's success, I have also
been able to obtain further examples of Poh Chap Yeap's porcelain and
stoneware. This is getting more and more difficult to source since it is now almost
20 years since he stopped potting but I will have over a dozen items
available at the start of this Christmas show. Finally in this section, I
should highlight that there will be a few examples of Patrick Sargent's
anagama pots available. Patrick, who worked in Switzerland, exhibited on
several occasions at the Harlequin Gallery before his tragic early death in
1998. Coming
right up to date there will be recently produced ceramics by Robin Welch and
two "Christmas regulars" in Michael Posner and Doris Mitchell.
Doris has taken a new direction recently and, although her porcelain is still
thrown, it is a little less "regular" than before! Obviously,
work by many of the potters who have exhibited at the Harlequin in the last
year or two will be available and "while stocks last" I will be
repeating the ever-popular £5 selection. Gallery
regulars Donald Wells and Tove Bowyer will by supplying the sculpture and
Denis Bowen's paintings, including many small works on paper will be
available alongside those of other artists. The last of the work available before Christmas that I wish to highlight is by a new artist to the gallery, Juliana Oyewole. Juliana is a printmaker but her work is really a mixture of etching and painting. Although prints, all are unique due to the colour and shading used by Juliana during the printing plate preparation. |
