Yuriko Hill was born in Japan and went to the Sokei Academy in Tokyo, where she made a special study of 15th century painting. In fact, it wasn't until she came to England that she became interested in pottery. Initially she studied at evening classes and followed this by attending Brunel University on a part time basis. She is now a full time potter and has her own studio in Central London, where she has worked since 1997.

Yuriko says that she doesn't know how her original training in Tokyo has influenced her work but feels that her sense of colour and shape reflect something of that time.

She uses stoneware and more recently porcelain, often decorated with slip and a wood ash glaze and says that the surface decoration is there to enhance the shape of the pot.

Yuriko has in the past exhibited in several mixed exhibitions and in February 2002 had a very successful first solo exhibition at the Harlequin Gallery.

Yuriko, who is married to the artist Anthony Hill, had her second solo exhibition at the gallery in April 2004 and new work was included in the gallery’s “Three Potters” exhibition during October 2008.
