Whereas
Hitomi is from Japan via the US, Adam Frew is a little more local i.e.
Northern Ireland via Greenwich, as he is currently apprentice to Lisa
Hammond. Born in Belfast, Adam studied ceramics at the University of Ulster,
where he gained a BA with Honours. However, he took time out from studying
after his second year to gain practical experience, which resulted in him
spending three months at the Winchcombe Pottery and a further ten months
working as a potter on a Finnish island, before completing his studies.
Adam has been at the Maze Hill Pottery for over a year and, besides making most of the
small batch production range, is able to use the studio in his spare time to
work on his own ideas. He does have a small wood kiln in Ireland where he
fired some of the work in the Harlequin showcase and until recently has been
working in the Shigaraki/Iga style favoured by many wood-firing potters in
the UK. Over recent months he has begun to explore Oribe ware, another
Japanese style that traditionally was partially covered with a thick
copper-green glaze after designs were painted on in brown iron oxide and
often embellished with a white slip. Tradition is only really a starting
point for Adam and the work in this style, gas-fired in Greenwich, is
certainly not just a copy of what the Japanese potters in Mino have produced
over the centuries as you will see if you come along to the Harlequin.
