Phil Rogers

Phil Rogers, who was born in Newport, South Wales, didn't start out with the idea of becoming a potter. In fact while attending art colleges firstly in Newport and then Swansea he was convinced that he "was going to be a painter of some renown". However, it was during the time that he was teaching in Cambridgeshire in the 1970's that his interest and desire to devote his life to the making of pots really began. There he discovered work from the Leach and Winchcombe potteries as well as Richard Batterham's ash glazed bottles in a local craft gallery, which got him "hooked".

Since then Phil's work has developed and his reputation has grown, resulting in more and more time spent lecturing, demonstrating and exhibiting worldwide. In 1997-8 he spent several months teaching, making and building kilns in Korea, as well as exhibiting his work at "Tho Art Space" in Seoul and the Tobu Department Store, Tokyo. Besides this visit he has also exhibited in Europe but it appears increasingly that he is spending more time in the USA, where he had major exhibition early in 2001 and 2003.

All of Phil's work is stoneware either fired in a downdraught reduction kiln or salt glazed in a smaller kiln. In both cases wood ash and local stones and clays are extensively used, as the examples below show.

Phil has had five solo exhibitions at the Harlequin Gallery and remains one of its most popular artists. His next exhibition at the gallery takes place during October 2006 and details of this can be seen by clicking here.

Examples of his work are always kept in stock and a selection that is currently available is shown below: -
