Aspects of Wood-firing

10th September to 1st October 2000

IAN GREGORY,GRAHAM ELLERBY & CLARE SUTCLIFFE

Ian Gregory is the best known of the three ceramicists taking part in this exhibition. Not only is he a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association of Great Britain, but also has written a number of books for potters. His work can be found in numerous public collections, including the V&A Museum in London.
All the work on show is stoneware sculpture of both animal and human forms. These will include examples with dry ash glazes as well as salt-glazed work.

Graham Ellerby trained under Henry Hammond and the Canadian potter, John Reeve, at Farnham. John had previously worked at the Leach Pottery and was a major influence in Graham's formative years. Since leaving Farnham, Graham has taught Ceramics and Art full time, which has given him little time to exhibit his work. It is therefore very pleasing that he is able to take part in this exhibition.
All of Graham's pots are reduced fired in a wood/oil burning kiln to 1300 degrees. Some salt is added towards the end of the firing and the kiln is reduce cooled by filling the fireboxes with wet logs. The kiln is then allowed to cool slowly for two days before opening.

Clare Sutcliffe has been potting for 25 years. She says that she was very fortunate to meet Michael O'Brien, who was Michael Cardew's right hand man in Nigeria, some three years into her career. Since then he has continued to be a constant source of inspiration and leaning. Besides this she spent 18 months in 1985-86 working at the Wenford Bridge Pottery as Seth Cardew's first pupil.
Clare uses local stream clays, together with brick clays and wood-ash glazes for decoration, which she finds are compatible to wood-firing.
