This exhibition of twenty-five boxed wood-fired pots from Bizen, Iga and Shigaraki and associated works will go on show at the gallery from 11am on Saturday 27th May. However, the boxed items will be “live” online from 2 pm on Friday 26th May. This means that they will simultaneously be listed on the website at https://www.studio-pots.com/japanese-pottery/ and will be available on a first come first served basis from then on. The other items on show will be available from Saturday onwards.
THE EXHIBITION
This exhibition follows the successful “Portable Pillow” exhibition that I held last autumn in association with Aaron Angel at Troy Town in Hoxton and is made up of work that I have be fortunate to acquire since then. Bizen and Shigaraki are two of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan. They have produced pottery of this kind for centuries and it is work that I have been exhibiting and selling since 2004. Besides these boxed items there will be other boxed Japanese ceramics on show in the gallery, together with associate wood-fired work by Japanese and potters from elsewhere.
ROSANJIN KITAOJI
One item of note that I should mention is the rare Bizen dish by Rosanjin, who in the eyes of many, me included, was the most important ceramic artist of the 20th Century. Potter, painter, cook and gourmet, Rosanjin was a true Renaissance man and a friend of the likes of Noguchi (who moved to live next door to him), Picasso and Chagall. In 1954 the Museum of Modern Art, New York held an exhibition of his work, and he is the only artist to turn down a nomination for National Living Treasure, which he did twice.
On Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th May the Gallery itself will be open between 11am and 4pm for visitors to see; touch and pick up the work and after that date I will be open by appointment, as usual.
