Lisa Sjukur exhibition

Last summer I travelled north of the river here in London to visit Lisa Sjukur at her home. Part of the joy of this visit was viewing and handling the pots. This exceeded my expectations, so much so that I included some of Lisa’s pots in a mixed exhibition at the Gallery in September. The exhibition was part of Plumstead Open Studios, which I have organised since 2016. Lisa’s work met with an incredibly positive reaction from myself and many that saw it. Therefore, having been excited by Lisa’s work, I wanted to stage her first exhibition and this is the result.

ABOUT LISA

Lisa was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, but moved to London in 1995 to study Graphic Design at Central St. Martin’s and has remained here ever since. After working as a graphic designer for almost twenty years, she decided to try out something more practical and hands-on and in 2019, she started an evening class ceramics course at City Lit in London. That was just 4 years ago, and it must be remembered that Lockdown has got in the way, as Lisa still does all of her making and virtually all her firing at City Lit. She has done a little wood-firing and would love to do more when feasible but is happy to continue to saggar fire in an electric kiln until the opportunity arises. As Lisa says about her firing process, “It is a way to create something akin to wood-firing. The saggar allows me to experiment and to create interesting textures, colour, and depths.”

THE EXHIBITION

This exhibition of thirty one of Lisa’s best recent pots went “live” at midday (GMT) on Friday 20th January.

On Saturday 21st January 2023 the Gallery itself was open between 11am and 4pm for visitors to see; touch and pick up the work and after that date I will be open by appointment, as usual.
