The Harlequin Gallery will be taking part in Plumstead Open Studios 2024 in London SE18 for the third consecutive year. All venues, including the Harlequin, will open from 11am until 6pm over the weekend Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th September. The items at the Harlequin Gallery will not be available online before or during the Open Studios weekend. Therefore, if items below are of interest it will be necessary to come to the gallery over the weekend. However I am happy to answer an enquiries before then.
A Lucie Rie pouring vessel, a Rupert Spira “Poem” bowl and a William Marshall yunomi made at the Leach Pottery included in the exhibition. PLEASE NOTE that the Lucie Rie and Rupert Spira items will not be on general display but can be viewed upon request.
Leading up to Open Studios 2024, I shall be adding images of more items on show at the Harlequin below so please keep an eye on this page for updates. I am also happy to answer any questions regarding items shown should be wish.
What’s on show at the Harlequin Gallery
Over the last couple of years I have been going through a process of dramatically downsizing the stock of the gallery. Plumstead Open Studios and the occasional stall at Plumstead Community Market on the third Saturday of the month has heled me do this. Therefore the major of items that will be on show this September will fall into the category of “old stock at not to be repeated prices”.
However, there will be excepts to this including a significant display of work by my favourite ceramic artist, Bill Marshall. Besides the yunomi made at the Leach Pottery shown in the top image it will be largely made up of work post Leach Pottery and include the work below.
Porcelain and stoneware by Bill Marshall (1923 – 2007)
Lisa Sjukur
Although Lisa will not be joining me as she did at last year’s Plumstead Open Studios, I will have some specially selected items available by her. I will photograph them as soon as I can and load an image below.
More traditional pottery
The process of deciding what is on show is far from over and so this page will continue to be revised up until Plumstead Open Studios opens at 11am on Saturday 7th September.
I will be including a selection of various sized wood-fired work; a couple of bowls by Charles Vyse; David Leach items and the final three bowls by Henry Hammond (1914 – 1989) that I have in stock.
Henry Hammond stoneware bowls. The smallest has an external maximum diameter of 17 cm.
Nic Collins wood-fired jar from the 1990s plus a Eben Stewart fire-box fired vessel. The latter was hand-built and fired in Bizen, Japan in late 2000.
Two of the David Leach (1911 – 2005) pots included in the exhibition.
Ray Finch (1914 -2012) stoneware ceramics made at the Winchcombe Pottery
Work by British and Japanese potters associated with the Leach and Mashiko Potteries, including Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada.
Other ceramics
While searching through my store room I came across the large slab platter below by Ian Auld (1926 – 2000). I have on occasions had pieces of Ian’s work in the past but none with colour such as this. Therefore I have no real idea of when it was made.
Other ceramics, paintings and sculpture
There will a selection of studio ceramics outside from just a few pounds and paintings, prints and sculpture inside, including the work below.
Other Artists taking part in Plumstead Open Studios
Besides the Harlequin Gallery there is a record 56 artists taking part in the Open Studios weekend at 26 locations in Plumstead. If you do come along to the Harlequin, it would be good if you did call in at some of the other venues, especially as there ten ceramic artists taking part. Details can be found HERE
